Welcome

Cultural Refuge Counseling is created for individuals who want to break free from cultural or familial expectations. Every family has an unspoken set of rules to be followed and perhaps pressure to uphold the family name by following said rules. When family values do not align with personal values or intersecting identities, conflict can arise and seep into different parts of your life. You may feel labeled as the sensitive one, the black sheep, or the scapegoat because you do not follow the same path as your family before you. This is an isolating journey; you do not need to walk alone.

Here are some specifics that you might want to explore in therapy:

  • Finding a balance between familial and cultural expectations and your own values.

  • Learning how to set and maintain healthy boundaries in your personal and professional life.

  • Challenge feelings of guilt, shame, perfectionism, and imposter syndrome.

  • Improving communication and conflict resolution skills to help strengthen relationships.

  • Learn and incorporate new coping skills and strategies to help relieve symptoms you may be experiencing.

  • Navigate how to explore, laugh, grieve and celebrate your own identity.

About me

As a Licensed Professional Counselor Associate (#89466) in the state of Texas, I offer in-person therapy in Austin, TX, and telehealth sessions throughout the state. In the past decade, I have worked with women, families, teens, and individuals in a variety of different settings including the public and private sector of the child welfare system, and the public school system as well as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco with the Ministry of youth.

As a woman of color and a first-generation college graduate, I never had the words or emotions to describe my upbringing and life experience until I began my therapy journey. I experienced firsthand how culture, society, and family can shape beliefs, thoughts, and values that often lead to exclusion and isolation when those values don't align. As an ally and sometimes someone who shares the same marginalized identities as many of my clients, I take a decolonized approach in my therapy practice. I recognize that cultural, societal, ancestral, and oppressive systems can significantly impact mental health. I recognize that healing will look different for each individual and approach therapy relationally.
